In the middle of next month I will go on my first trip to Asia in seven years. M. is going to be keynote speaker at a conference — too good an opportunity to miss. We will visit former home territory Tokyo and hope to see as many friends as possible in the short time we have; then on to Hong Kong where M. is going to give a presentation at the university and we will visit friends; and then to Shanghai, which is new to both of us. We did spent a week in Beijing in 1978, but that was like in a different century. How quickly data is moved from the active memory banks of the brain to some almost inaccessible storage facility! While I had no problems remembering how “Tokyo” and “Hong Kong” were written, the 上海 of “Shanghai” would just not surface.
Also on the agenda: Meetings with marketing and translation companies in Tokyo and Hong Kong which give me work from time to time.
Now let’s hope that United Airlines is not going to liquidate before our return date. And here a preview of the soundtrack of our trip:
