Lancaster’s own Don Van Vliet is dead at the age of 69. The one-time musician was known as Captain Beefheart and he was backed up by His Magic Band. I was a fan back in my early Hamburg days, probably taken more by his sense for absurdity than his musical style, which I once read described as “blues, psychedelia, free jazz and something indefinable.” Listening to his music today, it doesn’t sound quite as off-the-wall anymore – mostly. Some of Captain Beefheart’s iconic albums were Safe as Milk, Trout Mask Replica, and Doc at the Radar Station.
