New Twist

Oh comment spam! My spam blocker detected and quarantined roughly 80,000 pieces of comment spam over the past 12 months. Before deleting the messages, I usually take a quick look to make sure that no legitimate piece was blocked by mistake. Usually there aren’t any. What I noticed was that there have been content trends. For a while, almost all spam was written in the Cyrillic alphabet. More recently, message size increased, but those novel-sized missives usually made no sense.

Yesterday I discovered a new twist: short, very short stories. Here is a typical example:

Yesterday, while I was at work, my sister stole my iPad and tested to see if it can survive a thirty foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My iPad is now broken and she has 83 views. I know this is completely off topic but I had to share it with someone!

I wonder what stories they will come up with next.

We get a lot of these comments on our blog too – some of the stories are actually really entertaining! It can be fairly frustrating going through them all, but spam blockers and CAPCHA are really handy. I wonder what they’ll come up with next?
