Welcome to the era of copyright overreach. I am sure you remember such milestones as the DMCA, ACTA, SOPA, and the PROTECT IP act? Related are the outlandish monetary claims in RIAA lawsuits over illegal music downloads, such as the $150,000 per download per song in the now infamous LimeWire suit. For a long time, it was not clear how the industry arrived at these “absurd” (Judge Kimba Wood of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York) numbers, but now we know that Copyright Math is behind the calculations.
