Money in Translating?

On April 30, the New York Times reported on the profitability of speaking foreign languages. It quoted figures by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2004 which indicate that there were 31,000 translator and interpreter jobs in the country, up 40 percent since 2000. The average full-time salary in 2004 was $38,000, with those employed by federal agencies averaging more than $70,000.
