Atlanticism

I did my Friday shopping at the local Schnucks store – they have a reasonable fish counter. As always, the catfish was on special, but the salmon was not so expensive either. The label explained that it was “Atlantic Salmon” with Chile as the country of origin. I’m not an ichtyologist and perhaps “Atlantic Salmon” refers to the species irrespective of the ocean in which it is found, but my first thought was that Chile is not on the Atlantic!

One Response to “Atlanticism”

My geography has been set straight. P. called and quoted from the Encyclopaedia Britannica online: “Strait of Magellan. Spanish Estrecho De Magallanes, channel linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, between the mainland tip of South America and Tierra del Fuego island. Lying entirely within Chilean territorial waters, except for its easternmost extremity touched by Argentina, it is 350 miles (560 km) long and 2–20 miles (3–32 km) wide.” So Chile and Atlantic do go together – down south.
