Last Saturday, LA’s No. 1 Currywurst Truck was parked at the Westgate Media Park, down the road from me at the corner of Armacost Avenue and La Grange Avenue. (Interesting aside: My dashboard navigator seems to think that the “La” of La Grange is an abbreviation of “Lane.” It calls the street “Lane Grange.”) I walked down there and had the Currywurst Original. I mean, it is the Currywurst Truck, after all.
But Chris Töpperwien, the owner of the truck, has to make a living, I guess, so on the menu are quite a few items not related to currywurst. The Currywurst Taco is still justifiable, especially given the locale. But the Philly Grilled Cheese Sandwich? On a “Currywurst” Truck? Or the Kilbasa Dog? How about the Shrimp Roll “Hamburg”? The Kale Sandwich is probably a nod to Southern California food conscientiousness. But what on earth is – wait for it – a Nutella Grilled Cheese Sandwich?
